After an explosive three-match series at the Auckland Nines, which was won 2-1 by the Kiwi Ferns, the stage is set for an epic confrontation in the curtain raiser to the trans-Tasman Test. The Jillaroos will be led by prop Stephanie Hancock and boat an athletic backline and mobile forward pack, with Ruan Sims (the sister of Ashton, Tariq and Korbin Sims) starting at lock. The Kiwi Ferns will be captained by dual international Laura Mariu and were given a boost via the inclusion of utility Kristina Sue, who last played for New Zealand in 2008.

Kangaroos vs. Kiwis

Friday, May 1 at Suncorp Stadium. Kick-off at 8:10pm

The Kangaroos will have four debutants in Will Chambers, Josh Dugan, Alex Johnston and Trent Merrin as coach Tim Sheens begins to put a succession plan in place with an eye on the 2017 World Cup. Billy Slater has withdrawn frm the Kangaroos side with Greg Inglis switching to fullback and Michael Jennings coming into the centres. Australia will be keen for revenge after last year’s dual defeats to New Zealand, especially given the Four Nations final boilover but they’ll have their work cut out for them. New Zealand have named a strong squad despite the loss of Dean Whare and Jason Taumalolo to injury. The Kiwis have only named a squad as of Monday and will confirm their line-up later in the week.

Junior Kangaroos vs. Junior Kiwis

Saturday, May 2 at CBUS Super Stadium

As anyone who watched the Junior Kiwi’s enthralling 15-14 win last year will attest, there’s no love lost between these two sides. The 2014 showdown crackled with energy and genuine dislike and with some of the best young talent in the game on show, this one is sure to be another cracker. The Junior Kangaroos go into the match as favourites, boasting eight players with first grade experience to New Zealand’s one, with the entire Australian backline (bar halves Drew Hutchinson and Ashley Taylor) having had a taste of the big time. The sole Kiwi to have played NRL is Tigers forward Lamar Liolevava, but with explosive talents like Zach Dockar-Clay, Te Maire Martin, Renouf To’omaga and Jazz Tevaga the New Zealanders will go into the match confident of springing the upset.
