UKAD Indexing Tutorial

Welcome to the online tutorial on indexing for archives, created by member of the UKAD network.

This is a tutorial designed to help guide cataloguers through the process of adding index terms to archive descriptions.

By indexing, we are talking about adding structured entries for people, families, organisations and places.

The tutorial provides information on the benefits of indexing, and is intended to be as practical as possible, whilst looking to remain relevant to people in different contexts. We do not all catalogue using the same systems, so necessarily the information has to be fairly general, but we have included a number of examples and exercises.

This tutorial is not tied to any particular system. It is about best practice for indexing your descriptions and thinking about effective online access for users.

The tutorial is essentially a work in progress and we welcome feedback.
